An amusing video that makes me chuckle every time I watch it. But there is a poignant message in there: Sometimes you don’t want to be fixed; you just want someone to listen to what you are saying in a non-judgemental way. This video captures the essence of that, albeit through the use of humour.
Most times when I meet up with a friend all I want to do is be light-hearted, have a bit of fun and have the occasional sound off about life in general. I’m not asking for advice and I don’t want to get into a debate or have to defend every thought that I have which spills out of my mouth.
Unfortunately, that’s not always possible; there are those among us who are adept at being contrary; those who feel it is their calling to try to fix things; those who want to constantly school us in how to live our life, despite the fact that they are far from having their own life in order.
In these situations I often ask myself: Do they truly believe they are helping by giving advice, or are they just providing what they consider a solution to shut you up and stop you whining? I’m never sure.
What I am sure about is: If I ever get the urge to try to fix someone’s problem by offering unsolicited advice, I will remind myself: It’s not about the nail.
