Review of NCIS Los Angeles – Season 2

I’ve just finished watching the second season of NCIS: Los Angeles. It is absolutely fantastic. Prior to watching the first season I didn’t think I would ever take to it – being an ardent fan of the original NCIS. What initially got me hooked was the overlap between the two dramas that took place in season one.

Following a theme which was present in the CSI dramas, where they had programme cross overs and interwoven story-lines. NCIS: Los Angeles has a great story which has Gibbs and McGee (Mark Harmon and Sean Murray) from the original NCIS, working with the Office of Special Projects (OSP) – a branch of NCIS that works out of Los Angeles, California. They are trying to catch a Mossad assassin who was trying to obliterate a bunch of terrorists operating in LA.

For those that haven’t yet had the pleasure of watching this drama, the OSP is a deep undercover division of NCIS that is located in Los Angeles. Their agents operate more like agents from an intelligence agency rather than investigators. They go undercover to prevent threats to national security using all sorts of hi-tech gizmos. Throughout the series there is a back story that concentrates on ‘G Callen’ (Chris O’Donnell) who is one of the central characters in the series.  Callen is an orphan and has no recollection of his childhood or his family. He doesn’t even know what the ‘G’ stands for in his name. Each episode brings Callen closer to finding out where he came from. It also shows the shifting relationships taking place between the team.

The other characters in the series are, Special Agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) – Callen’s partner. Callen and Sam Hanna have a close relationship and a great rapport which results in some very amusing moments.  Special Agent Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and LAPD liaison Detective Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olson), who was introduced halfway through season one, are also partners and they bring an extra dynamic to the drama.

Four more team members complete the line-up. Nate Getz (Peter Cambor) the team psychologist, intelligence analyst and geek Nell Jones (Renee Felice Smith),Eric Beal (Barret Foa) cyber specialist and team super-geek. The team supervisor is Hetty Lang an enigmatic character, respected by many and known by few, a curiously intelligent and level headed and extremely amusing little woman, she is played by Linda Hunt.

I won’t spoil it, but I will say that the series starts in spectacular fashion builds to a crescendo and then leaves you hanging by your finger-nails desperate for series three. Highly recommended viewing.
