I met the author, Frank Coles, whilst he was in the process of writing this book. I was, at that time a practising corporate investigator and Frank interviewed me whilst carrying out research for Dark Market in order to get some perspective on the world of corporate investigation.
This is the author’s first novel and what a start! Corporate Investigator John Savage, the main character in this book, I have to say — is like me — in absolutely no way whatsoever. He is described as a ‘special force of one’ and it’s easy to see why.
With so many skills at his disposal he is like the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of the investigations world. After a case he was investigating ends badly Savage heads off to the Middle East in a kind of self-imposed exile — to become a mercenary.
Whilst on a mission he finds a dead body with links to an old investigation that he was involved in back home. This prompts Savage to return to the UK — to his old job — working as an investigator for the Financial Services Agency. He goes on to uncover the Dark Market, where anyone with enough money can have someone disposed of. It turns out to be a murder conspiracy on a large scale, and Savage works to uncover it.
It’s a complex plot line but is written in an easy going, captivating style. The book and its character, John Savage, have the makings of a great series of novels, along the lines of Jason Bourne or Jack Reacher. I hope Frank Coles decides to pursue it and write more. I give it 5 stars and it is available for download on Kindle.
